Equal Rights NOT EQUAL to
Special Rights
My wife is actually much more involved in local efforts
to secure equal rights for gays and lesbians than I am. But I am with
her in spirit, even if my body is chained to my computer and my bumper
sticker business most of the time.
Though I am sure some gay folks will appreciate this
sticker, you don't have to be gay to display this sticker and support
equal rights for gays and lesbians. I'm not gay and I am selling the
sticker. In fact, I sell several gay-themed stickers. Interestingly, I
don't feel any more gay now than I did when I started selling gay-themed
stickers.
For a long time I have felt that my straightness was a
kind of deficiency, like color-blindness. (No, I'm not color-blind.) I
have often wondered if my inability to feel passionately in love with
people of either sex is a kind of culturally-instilled
predisposition, like the fascination with abnormally thin women that the
fashion industry has foisted upon a generation.
In fact, I was planning to spend spring break at a
re-education camp in San Francisco where straight guys supposedly
"learn to cast off the narrow blinders imposed by society, and
learn to love all kinds of people, regardless of gender."
Unfortunately, the camp was canceled due to insufficient
enrollment.
Maybe next year I will be able to enroll. Meanwhile,
look for this sticker on my bike. Yes, I ride a bike a lot. Maybe that
will help me to become a little less straight. Anyway, that's what I'm
praying for.
