Governments Should be Afraid of Their People. -V
This
sticker borrows the words of the movie and comic book character named
"V."
In case you have not seen the movie,
V is a masked caped-crusader who reminded me a bit of Batman. He leads a
popular revolt against the British government in a futuristic story that
has parallels to Orwell's "1984". But the story may have even
more parallels to current events, depicting a ruthless government that
has risen to power through fear-mongering and deception.
I
found the film thoroughly entertaining, though a bit too violent at
times. A better tag line for the film might have been, "People
Should Not Be Afraid of Their Governments. Governments Should Be Afraid
of Their People's Knives." Or maybe, "...Governments
Should Be Afraid of Their People's Bombs."
I don't
think we are yet at that point at which blowing up buildings is
justified to rectify government malfeasance. But, as Condoleeza Rice
likes to say, I don't think we should take any options off the table.
There may come a day in the not too distant future when our democracy is
so taken hostage by the forces of evil (or greed), that the so-called
checks and balances on government power are rendered useless. When
elections are shams, when politicians are in the pockets of lobbyists,
when basic freedoms are being trampled underfoot, then the people may
justifiably rise up again to restore democracy. Revolution is the
final check, the ultimate balance.
