Vietnam II Relive the tragedy
Sometimes my ideas are bigger than my medium. I
really needed a poster-sized medium to pull this off with all the
flourish it deserves. Nonetheless, this is a fine-looking product, and it nicely sums up the quagmire the U.S. now finds itself in
with regard to Iraq.
Since before the U.S. invaded Iraq, pundits have been
commenting on how an Iraq invasion might or might not be like the U.S.
experience in Vietnam. The debate rages on, but the parallels have never
been stronger.
Of course, neither Vietnam nor Iraq is a movie. Each
is its own tragedy. But as a former film major, I could not help but
think of how Hollywood might try to promote the Iraqi quagmire if it
were a movie.
The image of Bush is real. It is from his now famous
appearance on the deck of an aircraft carrier, during which he declared
the end of major combat operations in Iraq. The image of the exploding
helicopter is fake, of course.
