Wal-Mart - Always Low Wages -
Always
This is not my first Wal-Mart bumper sticker.
And it is not my most original Wal-Mart bumper sticker. But it is, for
the moment, my favorite. I expect it will become my best-selling
Wal-Mart sticker -- though that is not saying much.
I
have long been a zealous critic of Wal-Mart. My zeal was recently
rekindled by the new documentary film, "Wal-Mart, The High Cost of
Low Price." From its union-busting, to its hiring illegal
immigrants, and its calling a 28-hour work week "full
time," Wal-Mart may well be called the biggest slave-owning entity
in the history of the world.
My little town of
Flagstaff, Ariz. has both a Wal-Mart and a Sam's Club. As if this were
not bad enough, we will soon have a Super Wal-Mart. The Super Wal-Mart
might have been avoided thanks to the efforts of our City Council, which
passed an ordinance restricting the amount of space a big box store
could devote to selling groceries. But the ordinance was narrowly
overturned by voters in a divisive vote. I don't expect this will do
much to improve the situation for Flagstaff's working poor.
Maybe things would have turned out differently if I had produced this
sticker sooner. We may have lost the battle in Flagstaff, but you may
still have time to save your town, and I hope my new Wal-Mart sticker
can help.
